Artful dodges its way to DDH

A VERY special delivery made its way to Devonshire Dock Hall yesterday.

The large front section of the third Astute-class submarine, Artful, was moved from the New Assembly Shop in Bridge Road, where it has been fabricated and welded together, to the giant DDH.

It is now set to be joined to the rest of the £1bn sub’s hull.

BAE said the section of submarine on the move weighed in at 260 tonnes and was 9m high, 15½m long, and 12½m wide. It was moved on a 3m high special low loader transport called a Scheuerle, which itself weighed 74 tonnes, had 48 wheels and was 14m long.

The was load driven by a single driver but the operation was under the charge of a director walking in front of the low loader.

Barrow is working on four Astute class boats, Astute, Ambush, Artful and Audacious.
